"Picture A New Life" 2009 Calendars Here Soon

Ernie here can hardly wait until the 2009 "Picture A New Life" calendars arrive! We're hoping to have them available for sale the last week of August. RUN - don't walk.... LEAP into action.... JUMP at the opportunity to be one of the first to Picture A New Life! Reserve your copy today - we'll let you know when they arrive.

"Picture A New Life" features beautiful photographs of a number of our rescued dachshunds and includes mini interviews with each dog about their new life. Teresa Berg generously photographed all the dogs for us and designed the calendar, so you know it will be awesome! Each 12" x 18" calendar is spiral bound at the top and printed on high quality paper. All proceeds go directly towards the rehabilitation and placement of rescued dachshunds in our program, so that they, too, may Picture A New Life.

Archie's Fund Raises over $7500 for Homeless Dachshunds

We were overwhelmed with the response to Archie's Fund, our first ever donation matching campaign which ended July 31. Archie's Fund originated when a generous benefactor stepped forward offering to match all donations made to DFW Dachshund Rescue, up to $1000. We quickly reached that goal, then additional benefactors stepped forward to continue matching donations, revising our target to $3200.

All the checks which were in transit on our July 31 deadline have arrived, and the grand total is in. Archie is proud to announce that Archie's Fund received $3540 in donations - exceeding our target of $3200! With $3200 being matched by our benefactors, and another $805 submitted for matching by corporate gift programs, the total amount raised comes to $7545.

Archie believes that every dachshund deserves a soft bed, plenty of toys and treats, and lots of love and attention from his family and friends. With the money raised, DFW Dachshund Rescue will be well positioned to help homeless dachshunds such as Cooper, the first dachshund to benefit from Archie's Fund, find loving forever homes. Cooper is a personable mini red piebald who was found abandoned, dumped in the country, miles from the nearest residence.

All of us at DFW Dachshund Rescue extend our heartfelt thanks to those who donated to Archie's Fund. We are truly overwhelmed with your support and generosity and are thrilled that our first ever donation matching campaign was such a resounding success!

Dachshund Rescue "Blotter" for July

We've received lots of favorable comments about our "Rescue Blotter", similar to a "Police Blotter", summarizing the types of requests for assistance we receive. It's helped to illustrate the sorts of calls we get, the reasons why people surrender their dogs, and the uphill battle that all shelters and rescues face every day.

We're a small organization, staffed solely by volunteers and we do the best we can with our limited resources. We wish we could help everyone who contacts us, but sadly, we are usually "full" and can only help a fraction of those who request our assistance. We do what we can, however, and always refer callers to other groups when we are full, or suggest other options such as training for behavioral issues, or low cost veterinary services for those with limited financial resources. Until we can eliminate puppy mills and backyard breeders, unfortunately, there will always be more dogs in need than there are available spaces in any rescue organization. Please help - encourage others to spay and neuter their pets! For other ways to help us, please refer to our How You Can Help page.

Summary: July 2008
Requests for placement assistance: 35 dogs
Callers requesting advice only: 3
Dachshunds accepted into rescue: 6 dogs

Reasons given for requesting assistance:
~ Shelters called about dachshunds in their care, hoping to get them into breed rescue programs where they have a better chance of being adopted.
~ Individuals contacted us about dachshunds in various shelters in need of assistance. We always provide referrals when we are full and unable to accept these dogs.
~ A woman contacted us about 3 dachshunds she had "rescued" from a notorious DFW area puppy miller, demanding that we step in and take the dogs off her hands. She became angry when we explained that when she rescued them, they became HER responsiblity, and that she should not have taken them if she was not prepared to care for them and/or find homes for them on her own.
~ A woman contacted us about 2 dachshunds in an out-of-area shelter. We explained that we focus on the DFW area, and referred her to groups local to her.
~ A woman contacted us about an agressive dachshund in a local shelter. We explained that we are unable to accept aggressive dogs due to liability reasons.
~ Good Samaritans contacted us about stray and abandoned dachshunds they had found. We were able to take a few as space allowed, but made referrals on the others when we were full.
~ A Good Samaritan called about a dachshund they found that was in excellent shape. We gave suggestions on how to locate the owner. Fortunately, the dog's owner was located the next day and there was a happy reunion.
~ An individual contacted us about their dachshund who was paralyzed. Their vet recommended euthanizing the dog but they ignored that advice, but they also did not want to keep their dog, preferring to dump it instead. We explained that we are not a sanctuary and suggested they reconsider their options.
~ A woman contacted us about a stray dachshund she had rescued. She wanted to keep the dog, and was seeking advice on the dachshund breed and on how to provide care for it. She willingly followed our suggestions, including having the dog neutered, and is thrilled with her new family member.
~ A woman contacted us to surrender her elderly dachshund. We explained that older dogs are rarely adopted, and gave suggestions on how to place the dog herself.
~ A woman contacted us about some dogs released from a puppy mill in Missouri. We explained that we focus on the DFW area and gave recommendations for rescues in her area.
~ A man who was deployed to Iraq contacted us to surrender his dachshund. We were full but made referrals.
~ A woman new to the DFW area contacted us and asked for recommendations for boarding her dachshund. We were glad to provide some suggestions.
~ An individual contacted us on behalf of someone whose dachshund was having separation anxiety issues. We provided several suggestions.
~ A woman contacted us after her father died, leaving behind an 11 year old dachshund who was not wanted by any of the family members. We explained that older dogs are rarely adopted, and we are not a sanctuary and not equipped to provide long-term care for older dogs. We gave her suggestions on how to place the dog herself.
~ A woman called to surrender her eldery dachshund because she no longer had enough time for it. After explaining the issues and alternatives, she decided to keep her dog.
~ A young woman facing a second unexpected pregnancy and an out-of-state move contacted us to surrender her dachshund.
~ A woman whose elderly father was moving in with her contacted us to surrender her senior dachshund. We explained that we are not a sanctuary, and gave her some options and suggestions on how to avoid having to abandon her dog in its final years.
~ A woman contacted us to surrender her wire-haired dachshund because she was "too busy". When we viewed photos of the dog it was obviously a poodle mix. We referred her to mixed-breed rescues.
~ A woman contacted us about 2 young dachshunds who were abandoned in a back yard with no food, water or shelter. We were full but made recommendations.

Annual United Way Donations can be Directed to DFW Dachshund Rescue

Most of us are familiar with the annual United Way campaigns organized by many employers, but did you know that you can direct your United Way donation to benefit DFW Dachshund Rescue? Most companies allow you to designate 501(c)(3) organizations of your choice to receive your United Way donations.

Check your employer's United Way sign-up process for requirements, and email us, or call us at 817-481-9272, for the information needed to "write in" DFW Dachshund Rescue. What a wonderful way to help the dachshunds all year long! Thanks for your support.

Remember DFW Dachshund Rescue in Your Estate Plans

When you sit down to do your estate planning, please consider designating DFW Dachshund Rescue Foundation as a beneficiary of your estate. A bequest, no matter the size, funds our mission of restoring the health and finding new forever families for our homeless dachshunds.

It's easy to do. Just instruct your attorney that you wish to make a bequest to "DFW Dachshund Rescue Foundation" in your will or trust documents in whatever amount or form you choose. Be sure to include our address if you’re a Texas resident.

Because we are a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation we may also meet the criteria for qualified beneficiaries for a variety of charitable giving programs which may be components of more elaborate estate planning. Be sure to consult with your attorney and tax professionals before embarking on any type of asset distribution plan to determine the appropriateness for your particular situation.

If you are interested in making a bequest and you, or your counsel, require further information please email us, or call us at 817-481-9272.

Fabulous Dachshund Photos

Surely you've noticed the fabulous photos we've been posting of some of our recent rescue dachshunds. Teresa Berg is the talent behind the lens, kindly taking photos for us and allowing us to use them on our website. Teresa, a professional photographer, adopted Jamie in April. He quickly became her favorite subject. Since then, Teresa has literally "Gone to the Dogs" and now specializes in photographing Man's Best Friend.

Check out Teresa's website to see photos of her canine clients. And be sure to take a peek at Teresa's blog for her "endless musings on portrait photography with a few subtle references to the real meaning of life..."

Who We Are

The Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue Foundation is a well-established organization with a history of providing dachshund related education and service to the DFW community. If you are looking to adopt or purchase a dachshund, have dachshund related training or behavior questions, or need to place your dachshund, we may be able to assist you. If not, we will make every effort to find you someone who can.

Dachshunds in our program are fully vetted before adoption. This includes being altered, receiving all needed immunizations, having a dental cleaning and being microchipped. Any other medical issues the dog has will also be addressed before being adopted.

Our dachshunds are placed in foster homes while they undergo rehabilitation and await adoption. This allows us to better evaluate the personalities of each dog, which provides a better match for potential adopters. While in their foster homes, the dachshunds are socialized, given plenty of love and praise, and some begin to pick up basic housetraining skills and obedience.

How You Can Help

If you or someone you know are looking to acquire a companion dachshund, please view our list of available dachshunds. Information on how to go about adopting can be found in each dog's detailed listing, and in the next section, "Adopting A Friend."

Even if you are not looking for a companion dachshund, you can still be one of our Guardian Angels. We are a 501(c)(3) organization, funded solely through gifts, donations and adoption fees and staffed entirely by volunteers. All donations are tax deductible. Every dollar received goes directly towards the care of our rescue dachshunds. Your support makes it possible for us to continue helping those dogs in need.

Donations may be sent to:
Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue Foundation
P.O. Box 1892
Colleyville, TX 76034

Donations may also be made via Paypal:

Make a Tax Deductible Donation
100% of your donation goes to help the dachshunds in need.
Thank you for caring!

Some companies have matching gift programs that allow individual donations to go even farther. Ask your employer if this type of program is available to you.

Adopting a Friend

If you are interested in adopting one of the dachshunds in our rescue program, please contact us for an application. It will be sent out to you via postal mail, as it is not available online. Once your application has been received, we will check your vet references, and schedule a home visit.

We are a private organization that fosters our dogs in individual homes. We do not have a kennel or a public facility of any type. We do not schedule visits with dogs until an adopter's application has been approved.

For more information on the joys and responsibilities of dachshund ownership, go to our DFW Dachshund Rescue Foundation website and read the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
